Were you
too, a weedy first form boarder in 1949?
Farewell George M Young - war hero and inspiring schoolmaster
Colchester: Saturday 20th February 2010 TRIBUTES have been paid to a decorated war hero, respected teacher and theatre producer. Major George Young, who has died aged 98, was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry during fighting after the D Day landings. Major Young was in a reserved occupation when the Second World War broke out but left Blackpool Grammar School after Dunkirk to start an illustrious Army career. He served with the Green Howards in North Africa, Sicily and Italy before the D-Day landings in June, 1944. His bravery in leading his men, in full view of the enemy and in complete disregard for his own safety, saw him honoured with the Military Cross. After the war, he returned to teaching and joined Colchester Royal Grammar School in 1947. He taught English language and literature for the following 17 years and, through his school plays, did his best to instill his own love of theatre in the pupils. He was so highly regarded that in 2002, he was invited back to open the new drama studio, named in his honour, at the Lexden Road school. His love of theatre continued through his life and he was a founder member of the Priory Players and a member of the Colchester Garrison Theatre Club. Wendy Brading - Essex County Standard The monochrome stage photographs on this page by Eric Richards, are from George Young's 1950's school production of Macbeth.
Not quite 1949 - I was a boarder in Gilberd House starting in 1951, and
recognise many of those in the snowman photo !
You actually once lent me some of your negatives so somewhere I've got a
whole lot of your photos - including Ablett and Allen, Bennett and a few
others from your year.
My year consisted of Hutton, Hutton, Hawkes and Hodges, Phillips,
Cullington and Sowter !
Mike.
